The words "Indoor sitting" written across this sheet of kraft paper point to the everyday purpose the designers had in mind. Drawn in graphite around 1948, the sketch shows an early lounge chair alongside studies of other seating and tables, with more chairs on the reverse. Charles and Ray Eames were experimenting with molded plywood and new forms for domestic life at the time, work that led to their lounge chair and ottoman, produced by Herman Miller beginning in 1956. Rough working drawings like this one record the steps between an idea and a classic object.
