*The Parricide: A Sketch of Modern Patriotism* casts Britannia, the personification of Britain, as the victim of a crime against her own family. The title's charge of parricide, the killing of a parent, turns the imperial quarrel with the American colonies into a domestic tragedy. This etching appeared in the *Westminster Magazine* in 1776 and was also issued as a separate print, dated May 1 of that year. It belongs to a wave of British satire that accused the political opposition of encouraging the colonists and so of attacking the mother country. Its title is an ironic comment on "patriotism," which the print presents as a cover for betrayal.
