Its German caption, "Der ist Schuld am Kriege!", reads "He is to blame for the war!", and the Star of David in its subject headings shows whom the poster accuses. The work was signed with the pseudonym Mjölnir, used by Hans Schweitzer, a cartoonist for Nazi party publications who produced some of the regime's most virulent antisemitic caricatures. Dated 1943, it reflects the Nazi propaganda line that Jews were responsible for the war, a message pushed through posters, newspapers and film as the conflict turned against Germany. It is valuable as a record of how that propaganda was made, and it should be read as hate material rather than as art.
