The title, "Nach dem Bade in der Maas" ("After the Bath in the Meuse"), places this scene on a river that ran through one of the most punishing front lines of the First World War. The Meuse flows through the Verdun sector, where German and French forces fought from February through December 1916. The print comes from an album of photographs assembled by Hermann Göring, and its caption data is unverified, so the exact unit, location and circumstances remain uncertain. Like many wartime images of soldiers at rest, it offers a glimpse of everyday life between the fighting.
