This print is captioned in German, "Nordamerikas Kulturträger an der Westfront," which translates roughly as "North America's bearers of culture on the Western Front." The phrase is sarcastic in tone, and the record links the picture to African American soldiers taken prisoner by German forces. Its date is given as 1943 or 1944, when Allied and German armies were fighting in western Europe. German propaganda often photographed captured Black American troops to mock the U.S. military's racial policies and to suggest that the Allied cause was hollow. The caption shows how the image was meant to be read as much as what it depicts.
