A bookplate, not a photograph, and one that belonged to Harry Houdini, the escape artist whose name became shorthand for impossible feats of freedom. Ex libris plates like this were pasted inside the front cover of a book to show ownership, and collectors of the period often commissioned designs that hinted at their interests. Houdini, who amassed a large library of magic, spiritualism and escape literature, used his plate to mark volumes that formed part of that collection. Look closely at the small pictorial and lettering details, which reward a slow reading.
