Written in the hand of Beatrice "Bess" Houdini, this letter is addressed to Ruthven Deane, and its handwriting gives a personal glimpse of a correspondence that a library has preserved. Bess Houdini was the wife and longtime stage partner of the escape artist Harry Houdini, who died in 1926. In the years after his death, she took up his campaign against fraudulent mediums and kept alive the secret code the couple had agreed upon, which she hoped a spirit might one day repeat. Letters like this one show how she kept her network of friends, promoters and fellow skeptics active during that period.
