A handwritten letter from 1911, written in Rome, includes a small sketch of an owl drawn in the margin by the painter Elihu Vedder. Vedder, an American who spent much of his career in Italy, is best known for his imaginative figure paintings and his illustrations for the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. Letters like this show how an artist's everyday correspondence could carry the same drawing habits found in finished work. Manuscripts of this kind are kept in library collections because they reveal a working artist's hand, voice and personal connections in a way that printed matter cannot.
