Few correspondents of the 1870s carried as much literary weight as the writer of this February 1874 note, Oliver Wendell Holmes. By then he was known as a poet and as the author of *The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table*, and he taught anatomy at Harvard Medical School, so his letters often moved between medicine, verse and public life. The record does not identify Mr. Deane or the letter's purpose, so its context is best read from the wording itself. Its place on a board of library subjects suggests a connection to books or reading, though the note alone does not confirm that.
