Ruthven Deane's bookplate is distinguished by its pastoral vignette of birds, a lake, and flowers, rather than the heraldic or lettered designs typical of the period. Deane was a Chicago collector and genealogist, and his ex libris would have been pasted inside the front cover of books from his library to mark ownership. Bookplates of this kind were popular among American book collectors around the turn of the twentieth century, when they served both as a practical identifier and as a small work of decorative art. Looking closely, the layered scene of water, birds, and blossoms shows how illustrators of the era borrowed from nature motifs of the Arts and Crafts movement.
