A small printed label with an abstract woodcut and a line from Friedrich Nietzsche, this bookplate was meant to be pasted inside a book's front cover to show who owned it. Bookplates, or ex libris, were a common way for readers and collectors to claim their volumes, and many were commissioned from printmakers who used the plate to show their taste as well as their name. Woodcut suited the task: the design is cut in relief on a block, so its bold, simplified shapes reproduce cleanly on a small page. Its abstraction also reflects the modern interest in reducing images to pattern and line.
