A small printed label meant to be pasted inside a book's front cover, this bookplate marks the volumes of the ornithologist Ruthven as his own. Owners commissioned these *ex libris* labels to show ownership, and many collectors of natural history books chose designs with birds, plants, or scientific instruments. Such plates often survive long after the books they marked have been dispersed, so they offer a trace of how private scientific libraries were built and labeled. Looking closely at the engraving or lettering can reveal the owner's interests and the printing methods of the period.
