Tall stalks droop under a deep blue sky in this scene, a somber change from the sunny orchards and bountiful harvests that usually decorated produce crate labels. Lithographers printed labels like this in large runs, mostly in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and pasted them onto wooden crates shipped by rail to city markets. Bold color and eye-catching scenes were meant to sell the produce before a buyer ever opened the box. A wilted plant is an unusual choice for that purpose, and it stands out among the cheerier designs in this group.
