The Sky Ranch name sets this label apart from the many generic apple crate labels on the board, suggesting a single grower's brand rather than a cooperative's. Labels like this were printed in bright color and pasted to wooden crates so buyers in distant eastern markets could spot a particular shipper's fruit on a crowded dock. Washington's irrigated valleys, reached by railroads in the early 1900s, made the state a major apple shipper, and its crate labels became small advertisements for that trade.
