Few places are tied to a single fruit as closely as Wenatchee, in central Washington, is to the apple. This crate label, printed with the Skookum name and the "Extra Fancy" grade, is one of the bright lithographed labels that growers and packing houses pasted onto wooden boxes in the early twentieth century to sell their fruit to distant markets. Such labels were meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded grocer's shelf, so their colors, animals and scenery often counted as much as the fruit inside. Today they are valued as small records of regional commerce and of the commercial art of the period.
