Tieton, in Yakima County, Washington, was one of the irrigated fruit-growing communities whose crate labels became a familiar part of the Pacific Northwest apple trade. Labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance, and the bright lithographed art was meant to make a shipment stand out on a crowded railcar or grocer's shelf. Many of these designs were printed in large runs and are now valued as small pieces of commercial design and regional history.
