Ripening red apples hang in clusters against a clear blue sky, the fruit catching the light at the edges of each round shape. Pictures like this were common in the fruit-label and seed-catalog trade of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when printers sold colorful images of produce to growers, grocers and packers. The image was meant to show buyers what a healthy, market-ready apple looked like on the tree, and its bright color contrast made it easy to reproduce in bold inks. Today it also serves as a window onto how commercial fruit was presented to the public before photography became cheap.
