Ripe red apples hang in clusters among broad green leaves, a scene that would have been familiar to growers across the American Midwest and Northeast in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Fruit labels of this kind were printed to sell crates of produce, and their bright, saturated colors were meant to catch a buyer's eye on a grocer's shelf. Apple varieties were often named on such labels, so the picture also records a period when orchards were rapidly expanding and local growers competed for city markets by rail.
