Few details survive about this particular label beyond its title, but the name it carries is distinctive: the Blue Goose brand, printed for the Melcher packing line and attributed to Bella Vista Fruit Farms. Crate-end labels like this one were pasted onto wooden apple boxes in the early twentieth century, when growers shipped fruit by rail to distant city markets and needed eye-catching art to set their produce apart on crowded grocers' shelves. Brand names often paired with animals, landscapes, or bold color schemes, so a goose motif on a blue ground was a typical attention-getter of the period. Looking closely at the lithographed color and the lettering shows how much commercial design effort went into fruit packing.
