This glass negative pairs two stage performers, Basil Sidney and Doris Keane, and the record gives no date or setting, so the sitting itself is hard to place. Keane is best remembered for her starring role in Edward Sheldon's play *Romance*, which ran on Broadway in 1913 and made her a leading actress of the period. The Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose files are the source of this collection, made a steady trade in portraits of theatrical figures for newspapers and magazines. Pictures like this one give a sense of how actors were presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
