The plate names Wallace Notestein, an American historian of early modern England who taught at Yale for much of his career. His 1911 study, *A History of Witchcraft in England*, remains a standard work on the subject. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service supplied without verification, so the identification should be checked before it is relied on. Bain's photographers worked in New York in the early twentieth century, producing portraits and news pictures on glass negatives like this one for newspapers and wire services.
