The record identifies its sitter only as the Duchess of Westminster, a title held by the wife of the Duke of Westminster, head of one of the richest landed families in Britain. That identification comes from caption cards and data supplied by the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain from about 1900 into the 1920s, and the record flags it as unverified, so treat it as a working attribution. Bain's files supplied portraits of society figures and public events to newspapers, which is why many of its negatives circulated widely in print. No date is recorded, so the exact moment the picture was made remains open.
