The record gives only a single word, "Gardner," as the title, and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so the subject is uncertain. The picture is one of the glass negatives made for the Bain News Service, the New York news photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899. Bain's files were built to supply newspapers with fast, topical pictures of people, streets, events and products, and the agency's work captures much of the early twentieth-century American press. The glass plate format, typically 5 by 7 inches or smaller, was standard for news photography of that era.
