Few of the pictures on this board show a fire company at work, and this one captures the mix of machinery and horsepower that marked American fire departments in the early twentieth century. Motorized engines were arriving in cities while horse-drawn wagons still carried hose and ladders, and crews often used both during the same run. The Niagara Falls setting adds a local note, since the city's streets were busy with tourists and industry and a fast response mattered as much there as anywhere. Look closely at the mix of vehicles and the gear the firemen carry, which together show a department caught between two eras.
