This daguerreotype records a sculpted relief titled *The Spirit's Flight*, not a painting or a live subject, and the plate has been trimmed to a smaller size than its original. The engraved brass mat credits H.K. Brown and E.D. Palmer, placing the work among the American sculpture of the mid-19th century. The photographer is unidentified, but the plate dates to between 1854 and 1860, and Henry K. Bush-Brown gave it to the Library of Congress in 1934. Its silvered surface, with the scroll-medallion case around it, shows the sculpture's soft modeling in a way a paper print could not.
