This daguerreotype shows an unidentified woman, and the sitter's name is lost, so the portrait itself is the main record of her. Made in 1855, it comes from the years when daguerreotypes were the most popular form of photographic portrait. Each image is a single positive on a silvered copper plate, so it reads as a mirror-like surface that shifts with the light and must be tilted to see clearly. Early exposures often took several seconds to minutes, which made stillness important to the sitter.
