Little is recorded about the sitter in this 1850 daguerreotype, and the surviving title breaks off before it can describe the portrait further. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-coated copper plates, which produced a sharp, mirror-like image that shifts with the angle of light. By 1850 the process was only about a decade old, and early exposures required sitters to hold still for long stretches, which is why their expressions often look so composed. Many such portraits survive sealed in small hinged cases, which protected the fragile surface.
