The sitter in this 1850 daguerreotype is unidentified, and the cut-off title leaves even its framing unclear. Each daguerreotype is a single unique positive on a silver-coated copper plate, with no negative, so it cannot be reproduced the way later photographs can. Exposures in 1850 could run from several seconds to a minute or more in good light, which required sitters to hold very still, sometimes with the help of a metal head brace. Tilt the plate in the light and the image shifts between positive and negative.
