This half-plate view of Niagara Falls is a copy rather than an original exposure. The record attributes the source image, probably, to Platt D. Babbitt, and notes that the copy was produced in Mathew Brady's studio and transferred in 1920 through the U.S. War College. Gold toning, a common finishing step for daguerreotypes of the 1850s, gives the plate its warm tone and helps protect its delicate surface. The number 53 scratched on the face and the Rinhart hallmark are the kinds of marks collectors use to trace a plate's history.
