A hearse moving toward the railroad depot sets this view apart from the usual scenes of Washington, placing a military funeral on a working street in May 1861. The record names Col. Vosburgh but gives few other particulars, so the picture is best read against its moment. That spring, the capital was filling with volunteer regiments, and rail lines carried troops, supplies, and sometimes the remains of officers being sent home for burial. Officers' funerals drew crowds and public mourning in those early months of the war, and the depot was a natural point of departure for such processions.
