A Boston lithograph of Abraham Lincoln, issued by Bufford's Publishing House in 1862, puts the sitting president's likeness into wide circulation during the second year of the Civil War. Lithographic portraits like this one were cheap to print in quantity, so they reached parlors, offices, and army camps far beyond the people who could have seen Lincoln in person. Images of wartime leaders were in high demand, and printmakers in cities such as Boston produced them for a public eager to follow the conflict through faces it recognized.
