Seven Pines, near Fair Oaks in Henrico County, Virginia, was the scene of fighting on May 31 and June 1, 1862, when Union forces under George McClellan pushed toward Richmond during the Peninsula Campaign. Confederate commander Joseph E. Johnston was wounded there, and Robert E. Lee took over the army that would become the Army of Northern Virginia. By 1912, the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, the ground was still mostly farm fields and woodland on the edge of the Richmond area, and many people in the region had grown up hearing stories from veterans of both armies. Battlefield sites like this one drew visitors, reunion-minded veterans, and local groups who wanted the fighting remembered and the land marked. This panoramic photograph records the open ground as it looked half a century after the fighting.
