Monticello, the hilltop home Thomas Jefferson designed outside Charlottesville, Virginia, was in 1912 a private residence held by the Levy family rather than a museum, and it had been left to decay for much of the nineteenth century. Visitors who came up the mountain that year would have found a house that many Virginians still regarded as a symbol of the state's Revolutionary-era leadership, even as the surrounding Albemarle County economy depended on farming, orchards, and the timber and rail traffic moving through Charlottesville. The University of Virginia, which Jefferson also founded, sat a few miles away and shaped the town's social life through its students and faculty. Nationally, 1912 was an election year, and Woodrow Wilson, a Virginia-born Democrat, won the presidency that November. A panoramic view of Monticello from this period records a site that was still being cared for as a family estate before its later preservation.
