In 1912, Seven Pines lay in Henrico County east of Richmond, where the city's economy rested on tobacco factories, flour milling, and the Tredegar Iron Works along the James River. Electric streetcar lines had pushed the city's residential edge outward, but the land near the old battlefield along the Williamsburg Road remained largely rural. Residents who had grown up after the Civil War were beginning to regard the field as a place of local memory, and the Virginia Good Roads movement was pressing for better highways that would carry more traffic past it. This photograph shows how open and quiet the ground still was, with the events of 1862 surviving mainly in the recollections of older families.
