Cézanne's bathers were a subject he returned to again and again in the last decades of his life, and this color lithograph, dated somewhere in the 1890s, reproduces that theme in a form that reached far more viewers than his paintings did. Cézanne made only a small number of lithographs, so prints like this one are rarer than his canvases. The figures are built from broad, flattened planes of color rather than smooth modeling, a method that shaped how painters after him approached the human body and the outdoors.
