The Royal Exchange in the City of London is the subject here, a building whose history goes back to the 1560s, when the merchant Thomas Gresham proposed a trading hall for London's merchants. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the archive of the Bain News Service, a pictorial news agency that photographed people and places in New York and abroad in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title is recorded as unverified, so the view should be read with that in mind. Still, the building's long run as the center of London's commercial life makes it a useful subject for studying the city's business district.
