The only identifying detail for this picture is the name C.M. Galloway, taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, so the name has not been independently verified. The image survives as a single glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, a format common among press photographers in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York, and it supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of people, places and current events. Without a date or subject description, the sitter's identity and the occasion remain open questions for researchers.
