Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name Mrs. F.P. Allyn, and the title comes from data the Bain News Service supplied on its negatives and caption cards, which has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1900, supplying newspapers with pictures of people and events. Its large holdings of small-format glass plates, many of them undated like this one, give historians a broad view of American life in the early twentieth century. A portrait like this is worth studying for its clothing, studio backdrop and pose, which reflect the conventions of the period.
