Father Christmas, the figure English children knew from home, appears here in a London air raid shelter, a detail that shows how the holiday carried on inside the war. Nightly German bombing, known as the Blitz, had begun in September 1940, and many Londoners spent long nights in Underground stations, backyard Anderson shelters, and public surface shelters. Set against bunks, blankets, and cramped quarters, the festive visitor makes a striking contrast. The scene shows how people tried to keep Christmas cheer alive despite the danger.
