Paper decorations and festive touches inside a London air raid shelter set this 1941 photograph apart from the usual wartime scenes. By that winter, the Blitz had driven many Londoners to spend nights underground, in public shelters, Underground stations, and backyard Anderson shelters, and families made these cramped spaces as homelike as they could for the holiday. Materials were scarce under rationing, so people improvised ornaments from whatever paper and string they could find. The picture shows how ordinary routines and small celebrations continued under the threat of nightly bombing.
