This photograph, dated January 7, 1941, shows a goose tied to the holiday season of 1940, when London was living under German air raids and wartime food controls. British food rationing was in force by then, so a bird like this stood out as a festive treat that had to be found through the wartime food supply. Pictures of ordinary soldiers with holiday food were often used to show civilian and military morale in the Blitz years, and the mix of a traditional Christmas meal with men in uniform captures how wartime London tried to keep its customs alive.
