Here the subject is the frontispiece of Susie King Taylor's 1902 memoir, *Reminiscences of My Life in Camp*, which set her portrait at the front of the book. Born enslaved in Georgia, Taylor learned to read in secret and later taught formerly enslaved people on the Sea Islands. During the Civil War she served as a nurse and laundress with a regiment of Black soldiers, and her account is among the few firsthand narratives of that service written by a Black woman. This halftone reproduction was made to accompany the book's publication.
