Marguerite Cassini, the daughter of Count Arthur Cassini, is the sitter here, and the portrait dates to about 1904, when her father was serving as Russian minister in Washington. That posting placed the family at the center of the capital's social and diplomatic circles, and the young countess was a familiar figure at its receptions. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, whose portraits of Washington's prominent residents in the early 1900s offer a useful view of how elite sitters presented themselves in that era.
