Bain's caption reads simply "Tuxedo," and the record does not say whether the picture shows the New York village of Tuxedo Park, the dinner jacket that took its name from that place, or something else. Tuxedo Park was founded in the 1880s by Pierre Lorillard IV as a gated enclave of wealthy families in Orange County, so the title most likely points there, though the caption is unverified. The Bain News Service, a New York agency active from about 1899 to the early 1930s, sold news and feature photographs to newspapers, so a picture like this one was probably made for editors looking for social or local interest stories.
