The title on this glass negative is simply "Rudolph," a name the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards without verification, so the subject and setting remain uncertain. Like the rest of the George Grantham Bain Collection, it comes from a news photo agency that Bain founded in New York around 1899 to supply pictures to newspapers and magazines. The plate, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, reflects the gelatin dry-plate method that carried press photography through the early twentieth century, and the missing date makes it hard to place within that body of work.
