A stag searching for its mate is the subject of this woodcut, a single page from the *Kōrin hyakuzu*, or *One Hundred Designs by Kōrin*. The book was published in Kyoto by Hosokawa Kaiekidō, and its designs draw on the painter and decorative artist Ogata Kōrin, who worked in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Pattern books like this circulated among artists and craftsmen, who adapted such motifs for paintings, textiles, lacquer and ceramics, so the page served as a model as much as a picture. The title "Stag looking for its mate" was devised by Library of Congress staff, and the print was later included in an exhibition on ukiyo-e.
