A fan decorated with maple leaves is the subject here, with the red-and-gold foliage that Japanese artists long associated with autumn. The sheet is a page from an illustrated Japanese picture book, a format that circulated decorative motifs to artisans and general readers alike. The Library of Congress dates it between 1830 and 1880, and its record places the printing in Japan no earlier than 1878, a reminder that woodblock printing continued well into the Meiji era. The page was included in the Library's 2001 exhibition on ukiyo-e, the floating world tradition.
