A seated man wearing a sash and a row of medals is the detail that sets this 1844 portrait apart from the other pictures on the board. The sash and decorations were a deliberate choice: in the 1840s, a sitter in military or state honors would display them to signal rank and service, and a daguerreotype like this one was expensive enough that most people chose their clothing with care. Daguerreotypes were then only about five years old as a commercial medium, so a portrait from 1844 captures photography at an early stage, when exposures were long and sitters had to hold still. Looking closely at the fine silvery surface and sharp detail is a good way to appreciate how novel the process was.
