The record offers little beyond a title, so this glass negative is best understood through the collection it belongs to. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of roughly 40,000 news photographs made and distributed by the Bain News Service in New York between about 1900 and 1920. Bain's operation sold pictures of current events, public figures and city scenes to newspapers, and its images are valued today as a record of everyday American life in the early twentieth century. The caption attributes this view to Denver, Colorado, a rapidly growing city of that era, though the date and exact location remain unverified.
