The caption on this glass negative reads "Matt. R. Denver," but the record does not say whether that names a person, a place, or an event, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded without verification. Bain's agency, based in New York, sold news and feature photographs to newspapers and magazines from the early 1900s into the 1920s, and its glass plates document everything from political figures to city streets. Denver, the Colorado capital on the edge of the Great Plains, was then a growing rail and mining center, so the picture is best read as a window onto that period's urban life.
